I used to be the one my friends wanted to stand next to in pictures.
Now I am the one who offers to take them. Every birthday. Every cookout. Every Sunday at my mother's. Y all get in, I got it. I say it like a joke and I am the only one who knows it is not one.
I am the one holding three purses and a phone.
And the worst part is that I know exactly what I am missing. Because I had it.
I am 40. I have lived in Memphis my whole life. I am writing this out properly because I spent four years looking for somebody who would explain this to me in plain words and I never found her, so I am going to be her.
The word that got me is anymore
My cousin posted a throwback last month. Fourth of July, 2010. I am in a white ribbed tank top and a pair of bootcut jeans, standing in my old bedroom.
Same face. Same girl. A completely different body.
I looked at it for a long time and then I put my phone face down on the table.
But I want to be honest about what actually bothers me, because it is not the photograph.
It is the way a room moves around you.
Two weeks ago I was at a birthday dinner. I had that whole table going for two hours. My girl brought a friend of hers who barely said ten words and stayed on her phone the entire night.
She got approached twice before we left.
I got paid dust. Again.
It is the barista who is short with me and lights all the way up when she orders. It is men asking her questions, being warm with her, in a way I do not experience anymore.

Anymore. I had to stop reading. That is the exact thing and I have never been able to put it into a sentence.Denise W. · 42 · Milwaukee WI★★★★★
I did not gain weight. That is what makes you feel crazy.
I need to say this part slowly because every time I say it out loud somebody looks at me like I am in denial.
My scale says almost exactly what it said when I was 27. Four pounds. That is the whole difference in sixteen years.
I am in the same size jeans. They just do not sit the same on anything.
My waist is gone. My stomach sits out over the waistband. And my hips and my behind, the two things I actually had, went flat.
Nobody warns you that your body does not leave.
It just moves.
Four years of aiming at how much
I was not sitting around complaining about it. I want to be clear about that, because I have had people imply it.
I trained harder at 38 than I ever did at 24.
Squats. Hip thrusts. Planks. Cable work. A program a trainer wrote out for me. Four days a week, sore for two.
I cut carbs. Then sugar. Then both. I did two of those 21-day resets. I wore a waist trainer under my work clothes for six months and I am telling you that part because if you have done it too, you already know how that felt.
One summer I lost eight pounds. It came out of my face and my chest. My stomach did not move an inch.

And every time something failed, the same sentence got louder in my head. Maybe it is my age. Maybe this is just what forty is.
I was up at two in the morning pricing out a tummy tuck. Financing plans. Recovery times. Somebody's cousin in Atlanta.
That is when I knew it had gone too far. I should not have to choose between disappearing and going under a knife.

I booked the lipo consult. Sat in the parking lot twenty minutes and drove home. Nobody knows that but my sister.Renata C. · 44 · Brentwood NY★★★★★
What nobody explained to me: my body stopped getting the signal
I found it in a comment section, late, on a post I was not even reading properly. A woman I have never met wrote one line and I have thought about it every day since.
Your body never stopped storing. It stopped getting told where to put it.
Here is what I understand now, and none of it is controversial. It is measured, it is published, it is forty years old, and it has never once come up in any appointment I have ever paid for.
My hips, my thighs and my seat are a reserve. Slow to fill, slow to spend. My body fills that reserve when it reads conditions as safe. That was the arrangement I was living under at 24 without ever thinking about it once.
Stress is the thing that says the opposite. Not one bad week. Years of it. Cortisol sitting high day after day is noise all over that line.
And when the signal does not get through, a body does not stop storing. It defaults. It files everything in the middle, where it is fast to put and fast to reach.
That is not my age. That is a signal problem.
- It was never my discipline Where a deposit lands was never on my fork and it was never in my program. Four years of effort in that column could not reach it.
- It was never my age either Forty is when it tends to start. Forty is not the mechanism.
- It is why my scale could sit still My number barely moved in four years. The filing did.
Squats build the muscle underneath. Squats cannot tell my body where to file what it stores. Every shake and reset I bought was aimed at how much. Not one was aimed at where.
Fourteen months of that could not do what the right signal did in six weeks. I am still a little angry about it, if I am honest.

Why I wish I had started this at 36
This is the part I think about when a younger woman asks me.
The reserve does not slam shut on a birthday. It empties slowly, one quiet year at a time, while you are busy blaming your discipline for it.
Every year I spent aiming at how much was a year the filing kept going where it had been going. Four years of that is not four years of no progress. It is four years of the wrong address getting more established.
I cannot get those four years back. That is the only part of this I am actually bitter about.
What I actually take, and what is in it
It is a dropper. Two millilitres under my tongue before my coffee. It takes four seconds and that is genuinely the only reason I have kept it up, because it happens before I am awake enough to talk myself out of it.
Five plants. And the reason I bought this one instead of the other nine I looked at is that the milligrams are printed on the back of the bottle instead of hidden behind the words proprietary blend.

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)The stress end of it, which is the whole point for me. Trials report lower cortisol. The evidence is real and it is still early.
Maca root (Lepidium meyenii)An adaptogen, not a phytoestrogen, whatever the other sites tell you. In the trials that measured it, hormone levels did not change.
Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum)Supports natural feminine balance. It can lower blood sugar and it is a cross-allergen with peanuts and legumes, so read that twice.
Beet root (Beta vulgaris)Circulation. Nitrate to nitric oxide, an established pathway and an unglamorous one.
L-arginineA nitric oxide precursor, in there as a co-factor next to the beet root.Six weeks, honestly
I am going to be careful here because I got sold a lot of two-week miracles and I am not doing that to you.
Weeks one and two. The only thing that happens is whether you remember to do it. That is it. That is the entire first two weeks. My sleep got deeper before anything else did.
Week six. My leggings. Not everywhere. In the two places I had been begging for. I stood in my bathroom and said okay out loud to nobody.
Month three. My cousin asked me in front of people whether I had had work done. I said no. I am the same weight, which is the part nobody believes.
I am nine months in now.

Week six my leggings sat different and I said okay out loud in my bathroom. Reading that she did the same thing undid me a little.Teresa J. · 47 · Milwaukee WI★★★★★
What my sister said, which is the part that actually got me
My sister is not a nice person about this kind of thing. That is why I am using her.
She looked at me across my mother's kitchen in June and said, you are standing different.
Not you look good. Not have you lost weight. You are standing different.
And she was right and I had not noticed. I had stopped doing the thing where I angle my hip away from the room.
Men who had been walking straight past me for five years turn their heads again. They ask me questions. They get nervous. A man I have known for YEARS looked at me last month like he had just met me.
And I stopped volunteering to hold everybody's purse.
Last weekend my girls posted the pictures from the function. I am in them. Front and centre, not behind the camera. I did not even notice until I was scrolling.

Other women sent me theirs
I put the first version of this on Facebook and my inbox has not been the same since. These two gave me permission to put them here.

What it is and what it costs
The questions I get asked most
Is this going to make me lose weight?
Is it going to make me bigger?
Do I have to keep training?
Is it a hormone?
I read maca is a phytoestrogen. You are saying it is not.
Can I take it with my medication?
How long before anything happens?
Does it taste bad?
What if it does nothing for me?
What other women have written to me
Trimmed for length, names shortened, posted with permission.
Same weight. Same size. Nothing in the same place. I have tried explaining that to three different doctors and this is the first time I have seen it written down.
Four years of planks did not do what this did. I am still a little mad about it honestly.
I have been the one taking the picture since about 2019. I did not know other women were doing the same thing on purpose.
I take it in my coffee like she said. Forgot twice in four months. Best I have ever done with anything.
